What made you want to coach sports?
While my first love may be mathematics my love of sport has always been there from a young age. Coaching combined both my love of sport with something I am good at – explaining how to do things! As a teacher my goal is to help pupils develop academically but as a coach I can help them develop in a number of areas outside the classroom.
You would be surprised how much that is learnt on the pitch can be transferred over into the classroom.
What are your goals as a sports coach?
I want everyone to feel comfortable participating in sport regardless of ability – we all have to start somewhere!
It is important that you enjoy what you are doing and it will only lead to better performances on the pitch if you do. A happy environment leads to greater participation and often better results.
We look to challenge the players and help them to reach their potential as a team however the motivation often comes from within the team rather than myself. With the right support the players will work hard for each other as much as for the coach.
What are your highlights as a sports coach?
In my time coaching I have watched a number of players gain incredible confidence and achieve things they thought were impossible. Seeing this development is something special.
During my time at Rendcomb a highlight has certainly been the 6 game unbeaten run with Rendcomb Girls U15A Hockey team.
Who is your favourite sports personality and why?
A prime example of how a happy and supportive atmosphere can improve a team on the pitch. He has reignited the passion and desire of a club that in recent years has not matched expectations.
Taking players under his wing and developing them in such an environment is fantastic for the sport and a good model to follow for any team.
