Years 11 & 13 Bridging Programmes announced for Rendcomb pupils

Rendcomb College is delighted to announce the launch of bridging programmes for Y11 and Y13. From 11th May, our students will move onto these programmes which are clearly structured but also provide flexibility and choice, allowing students to develop their independence and decision making. As you would expect from Rendcomb, the programmes are holistic and in line with our aims to develop thoughtful, adventurous and academically ambitious students.

Y11

Y11’s programme comprises a comprehensive range of activities to prepare them for A Level/BTEC study in September and to encourage the development of independent, confident learners. The programme is made up of seven areas:

  • Subject preparation – specific activities designed by Heads of Department to bridge learning from GCSE to A Level, without starting the A Level courses
  • Super-curricular – an opportunity to extend knowledge in an area chosen by the student, through a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) or independent learning project
  • Careers/Higher Education Preparation – a range of research activities to choose from to develop an understanding of possible career routes and university courses
  • Wellbeing – developing resilience and thoughtfulness through a range of possible wellbeing activities
  • Community – a range of activities to engage in the local community, developing communication skills, leadership and team work as appropriate
  • Preparing for Sixth Form – a course to develop a mindset for success in sixth form study
  • Life skills – a range of possible activities and courses to develop important life skills such as first aid, cooking and household skills

In each area students have specific tasks to complete to evidence their skills and knowledge development by a variety of methods (e.g. videos, posters, written work). Each area is supervised by a member of staff who can provide support, advice and feedback.

Y13

Much like the Y11 programme, the Y13 programme includes a focus on wellbeing, life skills and community action, enabling students to make the transition to independent living with confidence. However, the main element is mentoring. Each student has chosen a mentor that they will work with to co-construct a programme of reading, MOOCs and activities to prepare them for their next destination, whether that is a specific university course or the workplace. In weekly meetings the mentor and student will discuss their progress and explore their learning. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to direct their own learning and experience a study style more like they will find in higher education or the workplace.
