Rendcomb staff and students promote Mindfulness and Mental Health First Aid

Mrs Michelle Lucas-Halliwell, Head of Welfare at Rendcomb College attended the Optimus Education Mental Health & Wellbeing in Schools Conference, in Manchester on Tuesday 12, November. She was there to deliver a keynote speech on ‘Supporting Mental Health in School.’Please enter an introduction for your news story here.
After the event she said: “I really enjoyed delivering a keynote speech on how we have embedded Mindfulness into our curriculum, as part of our ongoing Wellbeing strategy at Rendcomb College. I also loved hearing what other schools were doing in this area.”
During the summer Mrs Lucas-Halliwell trained to become a First Aid for Mental Health Instructor. She has since then trained a group of sixth form prefects at the College (over two, one hour sessions) to become Mental Health First Aiders, in which they covered:
• How to spot the signs of key mental health conditions.
• How to have a supportive conversation.
• What to do if they have ongoing concerns.
The rationale for training students is that they will see students more than staff and will identify when peers are struggling. Also students may be more likely to speak to a student in the first instance.
Mindfulness takes place throughout the whole of the College from Nursery right up to Sixth Form as the staff recognise how important it is to help promote Wellbeing.
