The Art and Photography department encourages creativity and provides an environment where students are able to experiment and explore ideas without fear of failure. The department prides itself on providing pupils with a wide range of opportunities in a highly creative environment with staff who are committed to the learning of all.

While traditional skills and life drawing are taught, the emphasis is firmly on the individual and fostering their artistic and experimental growth. Pupils are encouraged to find their own style and push themselves by trying new and exciting techniques. Experiencing works of art first hand is also an important part of learning; in addition to attending talks by practising artists and visiting museums and galleries in the UK and beyond, pupils compete in national competitions and art and photography awards.

At Key Stage 3 and 4, students are taught by using the visual elements of line, tone, colour, shape, form, space, pattern and texture which form all artwork. Pupils follow the department’s ‘Process of Working’ which is the model by which units of work are structured from Years 7 to 13, from observation drawing through to research into artists’ work and on to final outcomes. As an integral part of the course, pupils will learn how to use pencil, crayon, paint and print but also other media appropriate to their theme.

At A Level, pupils are encouraged to enhance personal expression, aesthetic pleasure, imagination, sensitivity, conceptual thinking, practical skills, analytical ability and historical and cultural awareness.

During the A Level course of Fine Art or Photography, pupils are introduced to a variety of drawing, painting, design and media processes and techniques to develop a personal and original project. Pupils develop a strong ability to convey ideas through their artwork. The course also allows for the opportunity to respond to and contextualise both Contemporary Art and Art History. A strong emphasis is placed on the skills of observing, recording and exploring ideas.

Sixth Form Art students are based in the two studio classrooms exclusively for A Level students and each pupils have a private workspace.
